Washington Color School Mapbox Tileset

Tools: Mapbox Studio, Adobe Illustrator

This Mapbox Studio tileset and its icons were inspired by the work of the artists of the Washington Color School. An art movement of the 1950s and 1960s, the Washington Color School is characterized by non-representational color field paintings. I applied the aesthetics of the movement and its moment in time to every level of the tileset. The icons and choice of typeface lean heavily on the geometries that were common in the 1960s and the tileset uses the rich and saturated hues that define color field painting. Inspiration was pulled from artists such as Alma Woodsey Thomas, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland.
